Senior Tax Preparer
A well-established, full-service public accounting firm is seeking an experienced Senior Tax Preparer to join its team. This role is based in the Greater Houston area.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Preparation & Review
- Prepare and review a wide range of federal and state income tax returns for individuals (1040), corporations (1120, 1120S), partnerships (1065), trusts (1041), and non-profit organizations (990)
- Assist with the preparation and review of amended returns as needed
- Conduct tax research to resolve complex tax issues and ensure compliance with current tax laws and regulations
- Ensure all returns are prepared with a high degree of accuracy and completeness prior to submission
Client & Project Management
- Communicate with clients to gather financial information, clarify tax implications, and address questions or concerns
- Assist clients with proactive tax planning strategies aimed at minimizing liabilities and aligning with financial goals
- Manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met and projects progress efficiently
- Maintain organized and accurate client files and documentation
Team Support
- Answer daily tax-related questions from preparers and review work completed by staff
- Prepare and review weekly client status updates and reports
- Mentor and support the development of junior tax staff
- Assist Project Managers as needed
Compliance & Administration
- Prepare and transmit tax extensions
- Perform or review bookkeeping, payroll, and sales tax filings as needed
- Utilize QuickBooks (desktop and online) and tax software as required
- Draft correspondence to the IRS and state agencies and resolve client notices and inquiries
- Maintain accurate WIP tracking and assist with client billing as necessary
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; Master's in Taxation preferred
- CPA certification (or in progress) preferred
- 3+ years of public accounting experience, including corporate and partnership tax
- Working knowledge of state income and franchise tax for multistate filers
- Demonstrated success in building and managing client relationships
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, UltraTax, QuickBooks, or equivalent software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time permanent basis
