Tax Manager
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to join our growing public accounting team. This role is ideal for a tax professional who enjoys serving as a trusted advisor to clients while also playing a key role in team leadership, training, and operational management. The Tax Manager will oversee tax engagements, review complex tax returns, mentor staff, and help drive the overall success of the tax department.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical tax knowledge, exceptional client service skills, and a passion for developing the next generation of accounting professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Client Service
- Manage and review a variety of tax engagements, including:
- Individual (1040)
- Partnership (1065)
- S Corporation (1120S)
- C Corporation (1120)
- Trust and Estate (1041)
- Gift and Estate Tax (709/706)
- Research and resolve complex federal, state, and local tax issues.
- Provide proactive tax planning and consulting services to clients.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned client relationships.
- Review tax workpapers, returns, and financial information for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensure timely completion of engagements and adherence to filing deadlines.
- Identify tax-saving opportunities and strategic planning initiatives for clients.
Team Leadership & Staff Development
- Supervise, mentor, and develop Tax Seniors, Staff Accountants, and Associates.
- Conduct technical training sessions and provide ongoing coaching to team members.
- Review staff work and provide constructive feedback to promote professional growth.
- Assist with onboarding and integration of new hires.
- Help establish career development plans and support team members in achieving professional goals, including CPA certification.
- Foster a collaborative and positive team environment focused on continuous learning and excellence.
Administrative & Department Management
- Manage workflow, engagement scheduling, and resource allocation across the tax department.
- Monitor project budgets, realization rates, and engagement profitability.
- Assist with capacity planning and staffing decisions during busy season and throughout the year.
- Participate in performance evaluations and compensation recommendations.
- Maintain and improve departmental processes, procedures, and quality control standards.
- Ensure compliance with firm policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic initiatives and department growth objectives.
- Support recruiting efforts through candidate interviews, networking, and hiring recommendations.
Business Development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with existing clients.
- Identify opportunities for additional services and cross-selling opportunities.
- Participate in networking events, professional organizations, and business development activities.
- Assist Partners and firm leadership with proposals, presentations, and client acquisition efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- CPA license required
- 5+ years of public accounting tax experience.
- Prior experience reviewing tax returns and managing client engagements.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations.
- Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and project management abilities.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Experience with tax software such as CCH Axcess, UltraTax, ProSystem FX, GoSystem Tax RS, or similar platforms preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Taxation or Accounting.
- Experience working with closely held businesses and high-net-worth individuals.
- Multi-state taxation experience.
- Prior involvement in staff training, performance management, and departmental leadership initiatives.
